Short Outline
The Commonwealth Games-2010 village is a perfect combination of architecture, planning, and urban design. It will be a green village enforcing environmental considerations during design, construction and post games use.
Abstract
Delhi, the Capital City of India is hosting Commonwealth Games in the year 2010. The city is preparing itself for different Competition Venues, Practice Venues, and Commonwealth Games Village Complex for the accommodation of about 8000 participants i.e. athletes, team managers, coaches etc. The city is also getting ready as a host city in every way so that it can project its image to the prospective visitors and leave a long lasting impression in their mind for its development, art & culture, heritage, urban aesthetics, infrastructure, caring and friendly attitude etc. but the concerns of environment has been considered as foremost.
The Commonwealth Games Village Complex is appropriately / equidistantly located with respect to the various Competition and Practice Venues so as to minimise the travel distance, cost and time for the participants and the spectators. The site measuring about 65 hectares is along the bank of River Yamuna which bisects the city creating a very pleasant micro-environment in it. The village is being constructed with the state of art technology, principles of urban design with respect to different landmarks in the city, exquisite landscape and adopting a combination of permanent and temporary overlay structures so that the impact on environment is minimal. This project has been cleared by Ministry of Environment & Forests, Govt. of India based on about 45 conditions which need to be adhered to while designing, construction and operational phase of the project so that it is truly a green village and is exemplary project in the City / Country. It is being constructed on PPP mode to ensure quality and optimum postgame use.
As the site is between a busy Railway Line and a National Highway, presently it has high noise levels but appropriate treatment by making a designed green wall by experts of National Physical Laboratory is to take care of the noise level to reduce them to acceptable levels. The issues like water harvesting, ground water recharge / recycling of waste and waste water, economic use of energy and use of non-conventional energy are some of the salient features of the Complex.
The paper will highlight the design considerations and different environmental aspects and their mitigation measures based on the clearance given by Ministry of Environment & Forest so that such issues can be well considered in different Complexes, world over i.e. irrespective of their Administrative and geographical location.
