Lesson learned from developed countries’ inner city concept and strategies for a sustainable urban form in developing countries. Inner city in developing countries needs physical improvement through strategic urban planning and design.
Abstract
Sustainable development has been taken into account for urban development process. Developed countries increasingly put interest to implement strategy towards a sustainable urban form. This effort emerges since urbanization has brought enormous economic, social and especially environmental change that leads to urban expansion. Western countries give a special attention to the strategy of urban intensification and inner city development. Inner city has been considered as a key determinant in achieving ‘sustainability’ and effort to make inner city attractive for the social-economy activities and ecological balance is an important agenda. Urban regeneration in the inner city had changed over decades and recently the strategy orientation is geared towards more comprehensive form of policy and practice.
Developing countries with myriad and diverse urban problems need to set up with a comprehensive strategy to conquer the problems in order to achieve the sustainable urban form. Bandung’s Inner city needs a direction to improve its future development. Although, urban regeneration action plan is in Bandung’s local government agenda there is still limited readiness from the local government to implement the programs. Therefore, this research intention is towards the strategic approach for inner city regeneration and makes recommendations for Bandung’s local government on concept and action plan for Bandung’s inner city future development.
