Short Outline
Khartoum is one the Third World cities that suffers from many different problems. As a solution to these problems, politicians, planners and decision makers implement various planning policies. This study aims to explore the effects of these approaches.
Abstract
Great Khartoum is located at the confluence of White Nile and Blue Nile ( Mogran). The political and administrative capital of Sudan where the headquarters of diplomatic organization . Also, It is the largest industrial and commercial center and the core of all means of transportation. there is the main services of education, health, social and recreational activities in the whole country.
Population of Khartoum has increased in the last hundred years from 50 thousand people to 7 million people because of natural growth and internal and external migration, due to civil wars, drought and famine. As a result of this population growth the total urban area is extended to 250 times from 4 square kilometers to 1250 square kilometers that is because the imbalance of regional development.
During this period there are five structure development plans applied for Khartoum Situation, but because of uncontrollable population growth, poverty , weakness of infrastructure and social facilities these approaches are fail to reach their main targets.
This study aims to identify the statement of urban structure for great Khartoum city, present the main planning approach and polices for this area and put down the main reasons that led to their failure. Also, it aims to predict the opportunities of the new Khartoum Structure plan (Kpp5) for the next 25 years.
