This paper expresses the idea of heritage conservation for economic growth reflected by Taiwan cities, a way forward to sustainable urban regeneration. Different models used for heritage conservation by Tainan and Kaohsiung to achieve sustainability.
Abstract
- Heritage conservation a way forward to sustainable development

The rapid increase in redevelopment and urban regeneration has affected the social, cultural and traditional values of cities and people. There is a continuous change in the people's expectations and inspiration, so therefore people are thinking of their lost values. This creates a 'WIN WIN' situation between heritage and new development. Urban redevelopment is not only affecting the city fabric but also changing the tangible values and collective memory of community. Therefore, there is a need for balance, between redevelopment and heritage conservation which will leads to the ways of sustainable urban regeneration.

This paper will mainly focus on the ways and techniques used by Taiwan government to integrate heritage conservation in urban planning to achieve sustainable urban regeneration. The paper will also express local government's city vision that relates heritage conservation with tourism for the economic growth of city. This will also gives an idea, about the role of local government for involving and inspiring the community in the process of heritage conservation in Kaohsiung and Tainan. The local community is conscious to conserve the sense of belongings for future generations. They are trying to link and learn from the past and are thinking and doing their best for the better future of their coming generations; this clearly shows their intention to sustainable development.
