Abstract |
Design competition plays a role as platform for better communication, especially when dealing with the different levels of design knowledge interaction. They are often used as platforms for accumulating ideas to integrate with international design trend along with large-scale projects, specially confronting with city competitions in China. However, there is a lack of scientific analysis on design competitions. In this paper, I will analyze how the design competitions were translated in an international and local perspective with a systematic knowledge basis of design competitions in Europe. The research methodology is based on content analysis integrated with the I-C-F (design issues, design concepts and design forms) analytical instrument.
Different roles of stake holders, evaluation criteria and their relations with competition result were carefully coded, securitized and examined. Based on our analysis, it is found that the whole design competition process is full of gaps and needs procedural and systematic innovations. Possible implications of design competition in relation to urban development will be given as a result.
