Facing globalization in local cultures in Xochimilco
Abstract
Facing globalization in local cultures: Xochimilco, 400 000 inhabitants and 134.58 Sq. Km, is one of the 16 administrative-political structures in which the Federal District is divided. It is a region where traditions are deeply rooted and is consider by the UNESCO as World Heritage. My experience there allowed me to observe how the relationship between globalization and localism modified urban and social structures and to state some conclusions on the Case Study presented here: Unsuccessfulness of some actions imposed on a context invaded from its origins on all areas (social, cultural, environmental and territorial), therefore making it easy subject for the imposition of alien ideas that disrupt city-making processes, antagonize community supporting projects that damage interests beyond those that can positively modify current situation Personal involvement: During the first Democratic Government in the Federal District I was responsible for Xochimilco local government (1997-2000). This appointment gave me the opportunity to observe and face some confused efforts directed towards modifying systems of production and modes of life pretending to achieve characteristic of richer countries. The Interest (Analysis and Proposals): Due to a ''democratization'' process started in 1988, have arisen in Mexico new political parties and NGO'S. Some of them hold electioneering objectives with different approaches that propitiate land invasions, increased of informal commerce and appearance of new leaders and groups that speculate with land and population interests. Is starting to be a practice the need to take action locally, through a dialogue between those responsible of city management at all levels and local population, in order to improve the structures that reflect these contradictions. This Case Study shows also how dialogue with people has been changing to make them participate in modifying their spaces. It has been demonstrated that relying on educational and cultural projects, deterioration, which is a consequence of less developed countries contradictions immerse in a globalize world, can be modified
