Short Outline
This paper expresses concern towards the pollution of the natural drainage network of the city of Delhi and its exclusion in the process of evolution of the city of Delhi. The aim is also to suggest a methodology of including these channels as part of the green network in the city.

These problems may be common to other nations. Through this presentation I wish to highlight the lacunae in the planning system in order to arrive at some practical measures that may help us proceed towards a long term solution regarding the issue at hand. Through this presentation I would also like to learn of alternative planning means through which similar issues have been dealt with in other countries from those who have the experience on similar projects.

The presentation would consist of the study of the existing status of each of the nallahs or drainage channels that have been listed and studied with details of their location; context and surroundings; accessibility( physical and visual ); ownership status; scale of spaces; existing landuse status and details of legal/ illegal; organised/ disorganised activities taking place along the edges of each of the drains or channels. Having classified these under various heads an overall / macro scale proposal has been formulated and then these have been further detailed out as per the classifications adopted. The aim is to ultimately tranfer these policies on the ground working in tandem with a government agency.

This is an urban concern of much gravity for our city today arousing the attention of Planners and designers. I wish to contribute my findings to the concerned government authorities working in tandem with them to give our city a better future.

I propose this for the market place session at the Congress to be held at Utrecht ,The Netherlands in September 2001.

And finally I am interested to participate in the Young Planners Programme too.

*As part of the UNESCO sponsored first IsoCaRP YOUNG PLANNERS AWARD, presented to me in Oct ’98, I had undertaken this topic of research (in keeping with the theme Land and Water of the Congress held at the Azores, Portugal ). Though it is an ongoing research , I wish to present it at the congress also to get some useful insights from practicing colleagus all over the world.
