Short Outline
This paper shows a complete review of the urban design for Shanghai South Bund revitalization from the beginng research to the today's realization. It is a heritage district along the Huangpu River closed to the Expo Garden and the Old Bund.
Abstract
The South Bund area, one of the three-Bunds (South Bund, Old Bund and North Bund) along the Huangpu River, which is closed to the Expo Garden and connected to the Old Bund, is getting more and more attention after the 2010 EXPO in Shanghai. This paper studies on the unique site context and space character of this area, to refine and reproduce the inner nature. By tracing the development of Shanghai culture and industry, it explores a new approach to the revitalization of the historic district.To revitalize the heritage block is the main objective abd main starting point for this urban design.It is not only the the objective for itself but also an important step to drive transformation of the southen part of Shanghai downtown which is the beginning of this city. After more than 4 years planning and construction, we can find some preliminary result in 2011. This paper shows a complete review from the beginng research to the today's realization and gives some comments on this process.
